By improving parental level of literacy efficiency literacy skills of children are being enhanced as well. Thereby, children gain better opportunities for further schooling. Numerous family literacy programmes have been developed world-wide as to initiate the development of literacy proficiency of all family members and foster a culture of reading.

In Slovenia our family literacy programme was named 'Let's read and write together' or shortly BIPS. The programme has been designed for parents of children attending lower grades of primary school who would like to renew their reading, writing and numeracy skills in order to help their children with learning and literacy.

The programme is being carried out through meetings with parents, led by two teachers qualified for working with adults, and especially for family literacy.

The programme has been implemented since 1999 at previously selected primary schools in Slovenia. Each year its contents as well as its organisational aspects are being complemented in accordance with needs and experiences.

The implementation of BIPS is being financially supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport.
